Getting My Sh*t Together - Literally

I have a confession to make.

I have lost two pairs of show gloves, two stock ties, countless hair nets, a belt, and one stock tie pin over the past three years because of my total lack of show attire organization.  And also because of this:

This is my old/previous show clothes garment bag, given as a team gift to freshmen on the equestrian team in college.  It's exactly what it looks like: a bag.  No pockets.  So my post-show ride ritual is to...throw everything I'm wearing in the bottom of the bag.  Which in a lot of cases, literally means I'll never see any of it again for some reason.

When I took stock of all the stuff I'd have to buy this year - again - I realized it would be cheaper to buy a more organized garment bag than to continue to lose stuff.  It also cuts down on my show nerves to be so organized I never have to search for anything.  To eBay I went, where I paid $20 for this very used bad boy:

Jaguar makes garment bags?  Who knew.
It has everything I need to (hopefully) never lose all the stuff I just re-bought ever again and maybe make my show life easier.  Shoulder strap or handle, for hauling it from the trailer:

The front pocket has room for both of my tall boots in their bags (one of the relatively few perks of being 5' with a size 6 foot, yo):

A teeny tiny pocket for my stock tie pin:
Yes, new, sigh.

Two big pockets on the inside.  Gloves and hairnet go in the one on the right (also, there's only one glove pictured because...I don't know where the other one is.  I'm hoping to fix that situation before Saturday.):

Stock tie and belt go in the one on the left, with the stock tie inside its packaging, so maybe it will not only not get lost, but also stay nice:

Yes, also new.  #3 since 2013.  I am ashamed.

The main compartment has this really nice locking mechanism for hangers to make sure they don't fall off the hook, if you use wire hangers.  I don't.  Still works.

Finally, it has a heavy duty metal hanger attached with a chain for hanging, which will undoubtedly be easier than hanging the several plastic hangers off the stall like I had to with my old garment bag.

Anyone else taking steps to get organized this show season?

  2. All my stuff lives in my garment bag, too. I would not call it "organized" as that would be a stretch, but it has enough pockets that I know where things are and I don't tend to lose things. The other day I found a stock tie I wore in 2008!!! hahahahahaha. (still dirty)

    1. Oh lord hahaha! I always look wrinkled in pictures at shows because I am wearing things that were shoved in the bottom of that bag a few minutes before...

  3. I never thought I'd say this, but while packing for the show this weekend I actually said out loud "this would be a lot easier with a garment bag".

    That might have to happen.

    1. I'd give you my old one, but seriously, get one with pockets. It's worth it. Unless you really don't want to spend money on it, in which case, let me mail you my old one.

  4. After misplacing gloves on a few different occasions, I think my next "travel" splurge will be a custom helmet bag that both fits my helmet-with-visor and has a pocket for my gloves. Currently any spare pennies are going in a "truck and trailer" fund, though, so it may be a while.

    1. Truck and trailer are definitely more important, although I like the idea of a custom helmet bag. I just shove my gloves in my helmet, which usually means they smell bad...

  5. Cool idea to get a garment bag. I especially like how you can get your boots in there. I just keep everything in a reusable grocery bag. And then my husband emptied it to out his fencing gear in it and my riding stuff went missing. So I should probably get a more permanent solution.

  8. Knowing where things are and being able to pack mindlessly and quickly WAY reduces my show nerves too. Yay for systems!!

    1. Oh my gosh yes, that equestrian backpack I got has been the greatest thing ever. I bring a teeny tiny trunk, and that backpack, and a garment bag, and I'm done.

  9. Ohhhhh! Very nice. I just bought a garment bag from greenhawk for similar reasons. I paid more though for not as nice a bag.
